NJSEA Meadowlands Sports Complex, East Rutherford, NJ

Description

The NJSEA Meadowlands Sports Complex is one of the country’s premier sports and entertainment facilities, hosting almost eight million guests and dozens of televised events each year. The Complex is home to the NFL’s Giants and Jets, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, the Meadowlands Racetrack, and hundreds of special events.

The complex, which totals over 1,000,000 square feet, includes three major structures (IZOD Center, Meadowlands Racetrack Grandstand, and Giants Stadium) as well as numerous other ancillary structures.

The 750 acre site is situated in the northeast section of New Jersey, in East Rutherford, on previously under-utilized swampy wasteland.

Challenge

The main focus of the project was to convert the multiple independent and localized mechanical and electrical systems to more energy efficient systems that were centrally located.

Highlights

DLB provided the engineering services for this comprehensive self-funding retrofit project that essentially upgraded all of the mechanical and electrical systems for the entire complex including Giants Stadium, the IZOD Center, and the Meadowlands Racetrack.

The cost for the mechanical and electrical construction was $45M, and the expected savings over the 15-year life of the project are estimated at $76M.
